Göreme Open Air Museum
Göreme Open Air Museum is the top place in Cappadocia which attracts the most attention. The area is home to some of the best-preserved churches from the Byzantine era in the whole of Cappadocia. Nonetheless, these are not your ordinary brick and mortar churches; they are rock-cut cave churches dating back to the 4th till 10th century. In Göreme museum, which has many places of worship, the texture of each church and monastery differs according to their periods. Göreme region, which is the retreat of past thinkers and monks, has also become the land that inspired Saint Basil the Great. Göreme Open Air Museum was included in the World Heritage List by UNESCO in 1985. Elmalı “the Apple Church”, Saint Barbara Chapel, St. Basil’s Church, Snake Church, Çarıklı “the Church with Sandals” and Tokalı Church are located in Göreme Open Air Museum.
Zelve Open Air Museum
The Zelve Open Air Museum is a historic site in Cappadocia, Turkey, known for its unique rock-cut architecture and cultural significance. Zelve is situated approximately 10 kilometers northeast of the town of Avanos in Cappadocia. Zelve was once a thriving Byzantine-era settlement that housed a Christian community. The area served as a monastic retreat and later became home to both Christian and Muslim communities.
The highlight of Zelve Open Air Museum is its extensive complex of rock-cut dwellings, churches, and monastic chambers. Carved into the soft tuff rock, these structures showcase intricate architecture and ancient frescoes. Zelve is divided into three main valleys, each valley contains its own set of rock-cut churches, dwellings, and communal spaces. Zelve is notable for reflecting the coexistence of different religious communities. The site has both Christian rock-cut churches and Muslim living quarters, providing a unique historical perspective.
Ihlara Canyon Valley
Ihlara Valley is a stunning canyon in the Cappadocia region of Turkey, celebrated for its natural beauty, rock-cut churches, and the Melendiz River flowing through its heart. Ihlara Valley is located in the Aksaray Province, around 40 kilometers southwest of the town of Nevşehir in Cappadocia.
The valley is characterized by high canyon walls that reach up to 100 meters in some places. The Melendiz River runs through the valley, creating a lush and green environment along its banks. Ihlara Valley is renowned for its numerous rock-cut churches, chapels, and monasteries. These historical sites date back to the Byzantine period and feature well-preserved frescoes depicting scenes from the Bible. The valley offers a popular hiking trail that stretches for several kilometers along the river.
